Teaching the bidirectional directions within the mind gut immune system.

The more we understand these intricate connections, the clearer it becomes how the brain communicates with the gut based immune system and the gut microbiome, and what crucial role our emotions and our diet play in this complex system with direct consequences on our health.

Understanding the interconnectedness of influences mediated by the brain, the mind, the environment and thousands of dietary factors on this complex system explains why simple interventions in form of supplement pills, dietary changes and mind targeted approaches in isolation have only small effect on overall health and well being.

Successful treaments always have to address the mind gut microbiome system as a whole!

Now that we’re back home…here’s a little review of the food experiences we had.

9 days traveling and eating in Italy, revealed an interesting secret about the Italian cuisine.

Most of the time, it was not the widely praised traditional Mediterranean diet, and it was NOT made up of the 75% vegetables and fruits with animal protein predominantly coming from seafood and poultry.

In contrast, it rather consisted largely of easily digestible carbs from bread, pasta, pizza and lots of meat, with very little vegetables and salads. But we figured out a way to enjoy the traditional version of the Medi diet, by ordering amazing salads and vegetarian dishes.

This way we got to enjoy the wonderful social aspects of consuming the meals with friends and colleagues in beautiful settings without unnecessary insulin spikes…and our gut microbes loved it!

Here are a couple of such vegetarian dishes:

Mixed summer salad:
Lambs lettuce, radishes, strawberries, tomatoes, Arugula, radicchio, cucumber and pumpkin seeds and a dressing mixed from EVOO, mustard and balsamic vinegar.

Seafood sampler:
Dried and salted cod, sardines, smoked wild trout and salmon and salmon eggs.

Beet salad:
Arugula, tomatoes, apples, walnuts, yellow and red beets, baked goat cheese, strawberries

No visit in the South Tyrol part of Northern Italy
No visit in the South Tyrol part of Northern Italy is complete without a visit at the Messner Mountain Museum (MMM) in the medieval Juval castle high up in the mountains above Meran.

Reinhold Messner made the first solo ascent of Mount Everest, the first ascent of Everest without supplemental oxygen, and the first climber to ascend all fourteen mountain peaks over 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) above sea level which makes him one of the best mountaineers of all times. He was also he first to cross Antarctica and Greenland with neither snowmobiles nor dog sleds, and crossed the Gobi Desert alone, an unparalleled series of accomplishments of mind and body.

Juval castle and the museum is a fusion of Buddhist art, medieval architecture and memories from superhuman climbing experiences, and bears witness to Messner’s unique relationship with the mountains.

It houses an amazing collection of spiritual art from Tibet, and masks and artifacts from five continents reflecting the religious aspects of the mountains.
