What role do gut microbes play in brain-related disorders? There is likely an important role of gut microbes and its messengers on brain function, brain changes and development of disease But we do not have causal proof that microbes play a role in these human diseases such as depression, Parkinson’s and autism spectrum disorder We have many animal studies with which we can extrapolate results from to humans, and we have some human studies, many of which are not causal but correlational It is definitely not a linear 1:1 relationship with gut microbes causing all of these conditions as they are just one influence amongst many other factors such as genetics and diet For example, it is possible that to have major disturbances of the gut microbiome and never develop Alzheimer’s disease or depression It is also possible to develop a disease and have no pronounced dysbiosis of the gut microbiome #microbiome #mindgutconnection #gutbrainconnection #gutbrainaxis #microbiomehealth #guthealth

Here’s what you should know Dehydration occurs when water loss exceeds water intake, such as through sweat or urination. The body needs water for eliminating toxins, lubricating and cushioning the joints, and regulating normal body temperature. If left untreated, dehydration can lead to severe complications such as seizures, swelling of the brain, and kidney failure. Caffeine has multiple effects on normal water excretion by the kidneys all of which decrease water reabsorption leading to diuresis, e.g. a higher urine output. How gut microbes impact the brain There are multiple communication channels between the gut and the brain such as -Through mediators of the immune system -Through the endocrine (hormonal) system - Through neuronal signals from the production of serotonin These 3 communication systems interact with each other and are able to give the brain a fairly good idea of what goes on in the gut, particularly information about the foods we ingest Molecules from our food are metabolized by microbes and these even smaller molecules then make it to the brain and modulate its function This mechanism is obviously subtle as we do not exhibit major emotional changes or changes in consciousness every time we eat a meal However these molecules are impacting the brain everyday 24 hours a day, which can have a profound influence on brain structure and function These microbes therefore likely play a role in several different brain disorders #mindgutconnection #microbiomehealth #braingutconnection #brainhealth
