Part 2 of my thoughts on probiotics I am often asked what I think about the benefits of probiotics and which specific probiotics I recommend, and my first suggestion is to incorporate different types of fermented foods into your diet I am also often asked if the form of probiotics and fermented foods matters. These naturally fermented foods cannot technically be called probiotics as they do not meet the required definition, however they do indeed have many health benefits. Epidemiological studies have shown that the intake of fermented dairy products is associated with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, better glucose tolerance and a reduced risk of overall mortality. And a recent clinical trial has shown the benefits of consuming a wide variety of fermented foods such as kefir, yogurt, kimchi and sauerkraut. How food plays a role in mental health In this episode of the MGC podcast, I talk to @drewramseymd. Dr. Ramsey is a psychiatrist, author, and farmer. He is one of psychiatry’s leading proponents of using nutritional interventions. He is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and currently provides psychiatric care via telehealth. He has authored 3 books and offers online courses to both healthcare professionals and patients about healthy eating and its therapeutic effect in depression and anxiety. I sit down and talk with him about his emerging field within psychiatry and what impact it has on the treatment of common psychiatric conditions, like depression and anxiety. Considering the multiple factors that play a role in the pathophysiology of psychiatric diseases (from genetics, epigenetics, adverse life events etc.) how important a role do you think diet plays? 5. My thoughts on probiotic supplements I am often asked what I think about the benefits of probiotics and which specific probiotics I recommend There are hundreds of different brands being marketed based off of CFU (colony- forming units), which is the amount of live microorganisms in each dose, the types of strains and effectiveness based on small studies either performed on animals or in test tubes or in low quality clinical trials ➡️ While there is no easy, short answer to these questions, here is what I often say to patients in my clinic: - If you’ve been taking a particular probiotics for sometime and you’re sure it has been helpful for your symptoms, keep taking it. - If you have tried different probiotics but have never been sure if they’ve made a positive difference, you may want to consider alternatives 🥗 My first suggestion is to incorporate different types of fermented foods into your diet based on your personal preferences, and see how they impact your symptoms through a simple symptom diary for a few weeks Some of my favorite fermented foods are sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt and kombucha Adding a variety of naturally fermented foods to your diet can offer a multitude of health benefits ! #probiotics #mindgutconnection #guthealthtips #guthealth #fermentedfoods
