No visit in the South Tyrol part of Northern Italy
No visit in the South Tyrol part of Northern Italy is complete without a visit at the Messner Mountain Museum (MMM) in the medieval Juval castle high up in the mountains above Meran.

Reinhold Messner made the first solo ascent of Mount Everest, the first ascent of Everest without supplemental oxygen, and the first climber to ascend all fourteen mountain peaks over 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) above sea level which makes him one of the best mountaineers of all times. He was also he first to cross Antarctica and Greenland with neither snowmobiles nor dog sleds, and crossed the Gobi Desert alone, an unparalleled series of accomplishments of mind and body.

Juval castle and the museum is a fusion of Buddhist art, medieval architecture and memories from superhuman climbing experiences, and bears witness to Messner’s unique relationship with the mountains.

It houses an amazing collection of spiritual art from Tibet, and masks and artifacts from five continents reflecting the religious aspects of the mountains.

European Pain School at the University of Siena, 2
European Pain School at the University of Siena, 2022 topic: Pain, Inflammation and the Guts, June 11-18.

Presented lectures on my own career path from growing up in Bavaria to becoming the director of the UCLA Center for Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience in Los Angeles, and on the Neurobiology of IBS.

It was wonderful to interact with 40 selected students from the US and Europe presenting their research in different aspects of chronic visceral pain.

The common meals in the monastery’s courtyard and the faculty dinner at the central piazza in Siena were some of the highlights of the meeting.

Back in Europe and it feels so good!! I’m giving
Back in Europe and it feels so good!! I’m giving several lectures at the European Summer School in Pain Research in a converted monastery outside of Siena, in the Tuscany region of Italy, so we decided to take full advantage of the time in Italy!😁

1st photo is in front of the Arena di Verona, a Roman amphitheater (the “arena”) in Verona. An absolutely beautiful city packed with rich history even though the annual series of opera performances in the arena haven’t started yet 🇮🇹

2nd - 4th photos are from @agnulot restaurant where we were able to meet the phenomenal chef and owner, Mireille, and see her in her element! We were accompanied by our friends Alberto and Franca Bert who live in this UNESCO World Heritage region of Italy and guided us to the restaurant.
The food (tuna from Sardinia, eggplant, totellini with shaved black truffels) was absolutely delicious and made with super healthy, Italian extra virgin olive oil, my favorite!🫒

Photos 5 - 8 are from our stopover in Verona 🤯…absolutely surreal! 🏔

The thing that I’m always reminded of when we visit Europe is the culture surrounded by food. People eat together with their friends and family, laugh and communicate. Definitely part of the health benefit associated with the Mediterranean diet!

Have a wonderful weekend everybody! Anyone have some exciting plans going on? 🙏🏼
